My first job as manager was taking over newly promoted Slimbridge in the Calor Southern Division One South/West League. I took over with ten matches remaining in the 2016/17 season and the team sitting just above the relegation zone.
Under my guidance the team won eight out of ten matches and finished the season in 10th position. I also unearthed two up and coming stars from my youth academy, Cory Phillips and Danny Scott.
This season was notable for a second placed finish and a decent run in the FA cup where we managed to reach the 3rd qualifying round where we bowed out to Alfreton in a replay. The league performance was very good although we were not really in contention for the title as Ilfracombe Town ran away with the title by 12 points.
We suffered from a couple of poor games under pressure in the playoff and fell to the eventual playoff winner 5th placed Yate Town. Still it was a positive season and offered much to build on for the next year.
The team of the season featured a number of youth players. Of those Cory Phillips , Danny Scott and Peter Mantle played a big part in our season.
Final League position – 2nd place. Defeated by Yate in the play-off semi final.
Exited the F.A. Cup in the 3rd Qualifying round at the hands of Alfreton.
Defeated by Histon in the second round of the Southern League Cup.
This was a season of two halves. In the first half we went on a tear in both the league and the Southern League Cup reaching the semi-final. We also managed a good showing in the F.A. Cup. During this time we were sitting in the running for the title with games in hand.
Then we had the second half of the season. We couldn’t buy a win, and plummeted down the table. First losing the games in hand, and then dropping out of the playoffs. We sunk as low as tenth position before a late resurgence saw us finish in seventh position.
Final League position – 7th place
Defeated by Brackley in the 1st Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup
Lost to AFC Rushton and Diamonds in the semi-final of the Southern League Cup
Defeated by Royston in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the F.A. Trophy.
End of an Era
I was disappointed with how we had performed and contemplated looking for a new job. One position caught my eye and I tested the waters.
Sadly the board caught wind of this and they decided not to renew my contract, despite my protestations of how well we had done. This was made doubly disappointing by the fact that I had approved the new kits for the 2019/20 season.
I accepted the inevitable and resigned my position as manager of Slimbridge on 11/06/2019 after 843 days in charge.
